History

Established in May 1992 by the Government of Ghana to “blend the academic world with that of the community in order to provide constructive interaction between the two for the total development of Northern Ghana, in particular, and the country as a whole” (PNDC Law 279, Section 279).

“The UDS was borne out of the new thinking in higher education which emphasizes the need for universities to play a more active role in addressing problems of the society, particularly in the rural areas” (Effah, 1998).

The University by its mandate and constituency has a pro-poor focus. This is reflected in its methodology of teaching, research and outreach services. The specific emphasis on practically-oriented, research and field-based training is aimed at contributing towards poverty reduction in order to accelerate national development:

It began academic work in September 1993 with the admission of forty (40) students into the Faculty of Agriculture, (FoA), Nyankpala.

The Faculty of Integrated Development Studies, (FIDS), Faculty of Planning and Land Management (FPLM), School of Business and Law, Wa, Faculty of Education (FoE), and School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), Tamale, Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources (FRNR), Faculty of Agriculture (FoA) and the Faculty of Agribusiness and Communication Sciences (FACS), Nyankpala, Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS), Faculty of Mathematical Sciences(FMS), Navrongo and the Graduate School now in Tamale were phased in from 1994 to date.

Vision

The University is envisaged to be a Home of World Class Pro-Poor Scholarship. This is reflected in its motto: “Knowledge for Service” as well as its methodology of teaching, research and outreach programmes.

Mission

The UDS seeks to achieve its vision by:

1. Promoting equitable and socio-economic transformation of communities through practically oriented, community based, problem solving, gender sensitive and interactive research, teaching, learning and outreach activities.
2. Providing higher education to persons suitably qualified for and capable of benefiting from it.
3. Positioning itself as a national asset in the facilitation of lifelong learning.
4. Developing its information and communication technology infrastructure as the driving force for the education of more people, more rapidly and the improvement of efficiency and academic quality in order to advance community and national development.

Kumasi Campus
\- University of Education Winneba

COLTEK started as Kumasi Technical Training Centre by the Government of Ghana with technical advice from the British Government in the 1950s. It operated initially as a department of the Kumasi Polytechnic. In 1963 the constructional works for a permanent site started and was completed in early 1966.

Training programmes were transferred from the Kumasi Polytechnic to the present site in September 1966. This resulted in the expansion of activities as well as change of name to Technical Teachers College (TTC) and later metamorphosed to Kumasi Advanced Technical Teachers College (KATTC). The College offered certificate course in education studies as well as courses in specialised areas in Industrial Arts and Commerce.

The College (KATTC) became one of the seven Diploma Awarding Colleges when it was affiliated to the Institute of Education of the University of Cape Coast in 1977. This was in response of the restructuring of Ghana Teacher Education programmes.

Following the educational reforms by the Ghana Government in 1992 by the PNDC Law 322, (1992) which also elevated seven Diploma Awarding Institutions to constitute UCEW, KATTC became Kumasi Campus of UCEW in 1996.

After a decade of tutelage under the University of Cape Coast, the UCEW was granted autonomy status in 2004 by an Act of Parliament, Act 672, to become the University of Education, Winneba. By the same Act, the Kumasi Campus also became known as the College of Technology Education, Kumasi. (COLTEK).

History
The College has its roots in Ghana Telecom’s flagship Training Centre, which was one of a kind in West Africa. It was first used as a Royal Air Force (RAF) Training School during the Second World War and subsequently handed to Cable and Wireless to train Telecommunications Technicians for British West African Countries ( i.e., Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia).

The Training Centre progressed rapidly through deregulation and privatization to become the main source of teaching and certification in Telecommunications Engineering for Ghana Telecom employees as well as other institutions in Ghana and West Africa.

In 2005, Ghana Telecom’s management upgraded the infrastructure and equipment to modern standards in preparation for converting the training centre into a university for telecommunication and multimedia engineering & information technology.

The new Ghana, the Ghana that has decided to join the global economy, has to help its citizens develop the skills and knowledge they need to take part in the new economy. PROFILE
The Wa Polytechnic, which was the last of the ten regional polytechnics in Ghana, was officially established in September 1999. However, it was not until 2002 that the Interim Governing Council was appointed by Government to provide policy direction to the Polytechnic. The first batch of tertiary students was admitted in 2003 to pursue HND programmes in Agricultural Engineering and Secretaryship and Management Studies.

The Polytechnic started from “scratch” and has faced a lot of challenges. Nearly a decade after its establishment, Wa Polytechnic operated from borrowed buildings. For example, while the Wa Municipal Directorate of Education released their former offices to house the Central Administration of the Polytechnic, the Wa Secondary Technical School gave a four-classroom block to serve as classrooms, library, computer laboratory as well as departmental offices. The Controller and Accountant General’s Department and the Institute of Adult Education, Wa, also provided a hall each to serve as additional temporary classrooms.

The Polytechnic acquired land for its permanent site and prepared a master plan to guide the development of physical infrastructure with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). The support of GETFund has made it possible for the Polytechnic to build a modern administration block, a lecture theatre complex, workshops, and bungalows for some staff which are currently being used. However, the current allocation from GETFund is not enough to meet the numerous pressing needs of the Polytechnic. Residential facilities for students were and are still non-existent.

Strategic Plan:
The Polytechnic developed a strategic plan to guide its operation from 2006 through to 2016 with the vision to become “a world class centre for applied technology and providing career-focused education for rural poverty reduction and national development”. The five thrusts of the strategic plan are:
- Training, Research and Innovation
- Human Resource Development
- Physical Infrastructure Development
- Expansion and Application of ICT
- Financial Resource Mobilisation and Management

VISION
To become a world class centre for applied technology and providing career-focused education for rural poverty reduction and national development

MISSION
Provide quality tertiary education through three-year Higher National Diploma (HND), Degree and non-formal short term programmes and courses. The Polytechnic aims at becoming a leader in providing courses in a variety of subject areas using competency-based learning, especially in the engineering, applied science and technology and management to meet the needs of business and industry, the service sector and society at large

VBCI exists purposefully to convert people to faith in Jesus Christ and pursue their full assimilation into active membership of the family of God. Our continuing efforts are to bring people to maturity as followers of Christ, equipping them for ministry in the church while fulfilling their God given potential here on earth to the glory of God.

VBCI consists of a network of churches which function as lively organisms where authentic and enduring relationships are formed and fostered. Together, you and VBCI, the aim is to become that church that is described in the bible, where relevant teaching, in-depth worship, honest, dedicated friendships, ceaseless prayer and compassionate care for those in need is evident.

You will find that at VBCI, you are really very important because you are that important to God.

MISSION
Our Mission (what we are Doing) is to convert people within our community in all creative ways and develop them into fully functioning followers of Jesus Christ. We feel compelled to seek and to save the lost because Jesus came to do the same. But Jesus went beyond rescuing people from hell. He wanted to make them fit for Heaven. Through the various sub-ministries of the church, we desire people not only to meet Christ, but also over time, to grow in their faith so that they can live in obedience to His commands and become conformed to His character.
